New project to link Manama-Isa Town

A KEY bridge linking Manama and Isa Town will be constructed in a bid to ease traffic congestion.

It will feature two lanes in the direction towards Isa Town and will connect Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway and Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway, with designs scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

The project was part of several schemes directed by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa yesterday following a meeting with Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf at Gudaibiya Palace.

The Premier also gave the go-ahead for the second phase of Al Jasra Intersection Revamp Project, which includes a new lane from Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway towards King Fahad Causeway to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The project also includes the construction of a new lane on the highway heading towards Wali Al Ahd Highway, which the ministry in March said was being constructed as part of the first phase, while a 1,400-metre ramp was already opened in September from Janabiya Avenue towards Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway.

The intersection is being revamped to accommodate more vehicles and will have no traffic lights in a bid to end an ongoing congestion problem.

During yesterday’s meeting the Premier also gave orders to invite bids for a long-residence centre for chronic diseases in Muharraq.

The centre is part of a project to build a number of health centres on the plot of land on which the Muharraq Maternity Hospital is located.

The ministry is currently preparing documents for a tender, which is expected to take place by the end of August, while work on the project is scheduled to begin in March next year, according to a statement issued on Bahrain News Agency.

The centre is being funded by the Saudi Development Fund at a cost of BD13.87 million.

Updates on a new project to develop the Old Muharraq Suq were also discussed yesterday. The project includes building a historical-themed commercial building on a 3,255sqm area.

The building, which will include 31 shops, will be constructed in the market that was earlier damaged by fire.

Work on the project will begin on August 1 and is expected to end on December 16 next year.

The Premier also ordered the fast-tracking of infrastructure and development projects.
