Workshops and courses for talented creatives

CURIOUS creatives can look forward to a range of workshops, courses, talks and exhibitions at Al Riwaq Art Space this September.

An Expanded Media Club will be held on September 9, led by distinguished Bahraini director Hashim Sharaf.

Mr Sharaf will discuss the national cinematic identity in Bahrain, the challenges it faces, existing practices and trends, as well as future aspirations from filmmakers and the wider public.

The free event – entitled Cultural Identity on Screen: Exploring Bahrain’s Cinematic Identity – will go on from 11am to 12.30pm.

Artist Noor Alwan will put together an exhibition called ‘Sacred Practices’ on September 6 from 7pm to 9pm.

The show is a labour of love, paying homage to her late grandfather Mohamed Janahi. It represents a reflection through the collected personal artistic creations of Mr Janahi, and inspired pieces created by Noor, that celebrate her grandfather and his work.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to attend an exhibition-walk with the artist, for a more open and in-depth conversation about her process and take a closer look at the pieces on September 7, from 7pm to 8pm.

Participants can enjoy an intimate tour with resident artists on September 13 and 14 from 7pm to 9pm.

The Art Kitchen Residency Open Studio Tour will be led by Jaffar Al Oraibi, Ali Hussain, Mayasa Alsowaidi, and Mariam Alnoaimi

The event, which is free for all, invites those attending to share their thoughts and reflections with the resident artists and become a collaborator.

‘Ways of Seeing: Foundations in Art History’ is a six-week course that will take place every Tuesday from September 12 to October 17.

It will be led by William Wells, who will guide participants on the trajectory of global art histories from ancient times to the present age. The course, which costs BD120, will go on from 6pm to 9pm.

Mr Wells will also lead a two-day workshop titled ‘Coming to Terms with the Art World’ on September 18 and 20. It will provide a unique commentary on historical events, ideas and concepts that define artwork’s place in history.

The workshop will go on from 6pm to 9pm and costs BD25.

‘The Art of Comics: From Idea to Paper’ is a three-day workshop that covers the process of telling a story through comics, from story-board to finished illustrations. Led by Zainab Almahdi, the event which costs BD35, will go on from September 24 to 26, from 6pm to 9pm.
