WARNING: New Covid strain spreading rapidly among young people
Nationwide inspections continue to be intensified to identify and fine Covid-19 violators as health officials warned the new strain was spreading rapidly among younger people.
The Interior Ministry’s Public Security for Operations and Training Affairs Assistant Chief Brigadier Dr Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Khalifa called upon the public yesterday to follow precautionary measures instigated to help prevent the spread of the virus.
The official revealed that a total of 49,321 mask violations had so far been registered of people not wearing face masks in public places or inside shops since the enforcement of the order last year.
The ministry earlier this month stated that fines reaching BD876,680 had been collected. This figure continues to increase as more people are caught not adhering to safety protocols.
“A total of 8,198 measures were taken to ensure social distancing and 5,863 awareness campaigns were held until February 18,” added Brigadier Dr Shaikh Khalifa.
“A total of 186,535 disinfection operations were carried out and 368 training courses conducted on the correct disinfection methods.”
He urged members of the public to wear face masks, ensure social distancing and avoid large family gatherings as medics battle a spike in infections.
Salmaniya Medical Complex infectious and internal diseases consultant Dr Jameela Salman warned yesterday that the new Covid-19 variant was spreading at a faster rate among young people.
“The spread of the new strain alongside non-compliance of precautionary measures increases the possibility of complications from the virus, and may cause deaths among different age groups, based on our global monitoring,” highlighted the doctor.
Dr Al Salman said the elderly and those with chronic diseases remain among the high-risk groups and fears the young may pass it on with dire consequences.
The doctor urged those showing symptoms of the illness to call 444 for instructions and to stay away from family gatherings.
