Talks focus on sustainable development

Sustainable Development Minister Noor Al Khulaif has met several UN officials on the sidelines of her participation at a UN conference on water.

The UN 2023 Water Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ (2018-2028), is being held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The minister met Under-Secretary General for the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Li Junhua.

Ms Al Khulaif reiterated Bahrain’s commitment to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and highlighted the kingdom’s efforts in monitoring the indicators to evaluate and review progress towards achieving them.

The minister also met Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) president for the 2023 session, Lachezara Stoeva. They discussed the kingdom’s progress and preparations for the submission of its second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the global SDGs, due to be presented in July 2023, during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

The minister later highlighted the kingdom’s efforts towards the implementation of the SDGs, especially SDG 6 ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ during a meeting with United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Executive Secretary Dr Rola Dashti.

She discussed policies and programmes being implemented by the kingdom to ensure the sustainable management of safe water resources for all.
