Sustainable energy strides highlighted

An annual report highlighting the advanced status of the sustainable energy technology sector in Bahrain was released yesterday.

The report for 2018 contains an overview of the Sustainable Energy Centre’s achievements last year.

Set up under the Electricity and Water Affairs Minister, the centre plays a key role in the formulation and implementation of renewable energy policies, legislation and strategies in Bahrain. The centre last year achieved investment initiatives and projects that promote energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy in the national energy mix.

Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza, who released the report, said: “This is a year of innovation in the field of renewable energy in Bahrain. The report highlights the advanced status of the sustainable energy technology sector in Bahrain and future global market opportunities that local companies can benefit from.

Some of the most prominent projects and initiatives achieved by the centre in renewable energy and energy efficiency are as follows:

- Completion of Net Metering System

- Tender for construction of a 100MW solar power plant

- Installation of solar energy systems in The Avenues Mall.

- Inauguration of the first government building with renewable energy

- Solar energy systems in bus stations.

- Bahrain’s Wind Atlas, first comprehensive study of wind sources in the country.
