Strict austerity measures underway

Bahrain's government plans to introduce strict austerity measures in the coming days.

Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Minister told MPs today that the government had to trim its spending amid the current circumstances.

He added that there are 40,000 civil servants, who the government was committed to accommodate within financial and administrative arrangements.

"We are planning to introduce within the upcoming days stringent measures to further reduce costs in the government," Mr Al Buainain said during Parliament’s first ever remote session.

"The current circumstances require we manage spending to the highly important.”

The comments were made as MPs debated obliging civil servants to undergo 30 compulsory hours of training in a year.
