Steps to combat virus praised

Public Security chief Lieutenant-General Tariq Al Hassan has praised measures taken by Bahrain to control the spread of Covid-19.

Speaking during an online meeting yesterday with police chiefs in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region which are members of the Interpol, Lt-Gen Al Hassan said that steps taken well in advance were crucial in reducing the number of fatalities among citizens and residents.

He hailed Team Bahrain, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, which has played a crucial role in tackling the challenge.

He said Bahrain has followed a clear policy that protects the community, and is based on promoting and implementing the principles of human rights.

He noted that the approach has involved dealing with citizens and residents equally, in terms of the efficiency of healthcare and provision of Covid-19 medical services. Over 150,000 free tests have been conducted to detect active cases and identify their contacts, including proactive testing campaigns at suspected locations, at a rate of 882 tests per 10,000 individuals.

The Public Security chief said that Bahrain has not closed its borders with neighbouring countries and has established measures and regulations to ensure continued transportation and availability of food and other necessities.

Bahrain, he said, has also taken the remarkable step of launching an economic stimulus package that includes paying the salaries of citizens in the private sector for three months and paying the electricity and water bills for all subscribers for the same period.

He said that the Interior Ministry has been functioning with full dedication and in an integrated and co-ordinated manner. It has formed a specialised security team to detect active cases, carried out contact tracing efforts and assisted the relevant authorities in adopting recommended precautionary measures.
