SPL Treatment Plant work at Alba on track says top official

MANAMA: The construction of Alba’s Spent Pot Lining (SPL) Treatment Plant is progressing as per schedule, the smelter’s chief executive Ali Al Baqali has said after a visit to the construction site earlier this month.

In line with Bahrain’s National Waste Management Strategy led by His Majesty King Hamad’s personal representative and Supreme Council for Environment president Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the project aims to provide a value-creating and sustainable solution to treat SPL while ensuring zero-waste.

An announcement yesterday said the project’s overall progress was more than 21 per cent and it achieved over 35,078 working hours without LTI by May-end 2020.

A first of its kind in GCC, the SPL Treatment Plant will have the capacity to treat 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes of SPL a year, which, after being processed, can be used in other industries.

The plant is expected to be operational by Q1-2021.

“Being one of the blue-chip assets of Bahrain, our aim is to lead the fields in sustainability – in line with Vision 2030 – and set the benchmark to transform SPL into value-added products,” added Mr Al Baqali.
