Schools set to open doors to pupils today

MANAMA: Bahrain’s public schools will open for pupils today as Bahrain continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic. Administrative and teaching staff have already resumed work with 50 per cent of teachers attending on a rotational basis.

Nearly 147,000 students, who opted to study online also started their new school year two weeks ago.

Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi yesterday said arrangements have been finalised for a safe start to the new school year in co-ordination with the National Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus. He told the Bahrain News Agency in an interview that the ministry has taken steps to ensure sustainable education and continuous assessment of students’ work while monitoring schools’ performance.

The ministry conducted an online parent opinion survey during summer vacation involving about 112,000 parents. Of these, 36 per cent opted for a return to school in a hybrid model – combining at-home distance learning and in-person classroom instruction, while nearly 64pc chose distance learning only, Dr Al Nuaimi said.

The ministry recorded 6,245,359 visits to its e-Learning Portal (edunet) since the beginning of the new school year. Dr Al Nuaimi stressed the importance of diversifying learning channels as the country and the world continue to grapple with the coronavirus. He urged parents to co-operate with the ministry to ensure that the learning process continues under the current circumstances. He said a glitch that hit the online portal on Tuesday was due to a routine maintenance of the database.
