Rising price alert

Rising prices of some food products following a tenfold increase in freight costs are due to a surge in their prices in the country of origin, said Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s food wealth committee vice-chairman Muslem Asad Mohammed.

Prices of corn oil and sunflower oil imported from Malaysia, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine have gone up, he said.

A carton of sunflower oil rose to BD9 from BD6 and a carton of corn oil rose to BD11 from BD8.

“Coffee price has increased from BD1 per kilo to BD2.5 as a result of damaged coffee crop in Brazil by 45 per cent due to a lack of rain, and the damage of Indian crops due to increasing rainfall.

Prices of milk of all kinds increased by 10-20pc,” he pointed out.

He said the local markets have also witnessed a rise in sugar prices by 20-30pc due to the closure of the world’s largest sugar factory in Brazil, in addition to an increase in shipping prices.
