NIHR: Bahrain has taken several measures to protect senior citizens

Manama, June 8 (BNA): Bahrain has taken several measures and decisions to support human rights in general, and the elderly in particular, during the exceptional conditions across the world, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has said.

The NIHR, based on its responsibility and terms of reference under its establishment law, has closely watched these decisions and procedures and the mechanism of dealing with the competent authorities with the elderly to ensure their protection from infection with the Corona virus, NIHR President Maria Khoury said.

She highlighted how Bahrain worked on ensuring the safety of all the components of the society and on providing economic and social assistance to help the people through the pandemic and its repercussions.

Maria also lauded the campaigns launched to raise funds and give people and establishments the opportunity to contribute to the national efforts to fight the coronavirus and to alleviate its consequences.

Expanding alternative punishments, leveraging technology and giving priorities to senior citizens, pregnant women and mothers and assisting the repatriation of Bahrainis stranded abroad were among the measures that Bahrain adopted and supported in its success story, she said.

Maria stressed in her statement the importance of adhering to the precautionary measures and of implementing health instructions and guidelines issued by official authorities to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

The NIHR called on citizens and residents to be more careful and cooperative through active participation in national efforts to fight the virus
