NBB migrates SWIFT system to Amazon Web Service cloud

MANAMA: The National Bank of Bahrain Group has announced the migration of its international remittance system (SWIFT) to the Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud, through a partnership with the Allied Engineering Group (AEG).

With banks from more than 65 countries worldwide connected to its data centres, AEG operates an expanded certified SWIFT infrastructure hosted on AWS, which has regional data centres located in Bahrain.

Razi Amin, head of information technology at NBB, said: “Our partnership with AEG and AWS ensures that NBB Group’s SWIFT systems are hosted and managed according to the highest information security levels in compliance with the adopted service availability levels, best practices and global standards. This migration will act as a strong foundation to activating a smoother service migration in the future and align NBB Group with the global technological shifts taking place in the sector.”

According to Bahrain Islamic Bank chief information officer Osama Nasr, the technological shift would help the group ensure availability of a better service with an improved system that will enhance cost management.

The migration to AWS will efficiently reduce down-time by enhancing streamlined systems, without affecting SWIFT operations, he added.

AEG Bahrain head Mohamed Sanad said the NBB Group was the first bank amongst all connected banks within the Mena region to benefit from this particular model.
