MPs vote to move public holidays

MPs today voted unanimously in favour of a legislative proposal to move public holidays if they fall two days before or after a weekend.

It aims to attach the public holidays with weekends in an attempt to reduce absenteeism at work.

However, under the proposal the three-day Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha and the two-day Ashoora holidays are not subject to the shift.

It means that the two-day National Day, Labour Day, Prophet Mohammed’s birthday, the Islamic New Year and the Gregorian calendar New Year are open for the shift.

The Civil Service Bureau said moving the holidays around makes them less important as people want to mark or celebrate them on actual dates.

It will be now reviewed by the Cabinet.
