Middle East to see over 3,000 aircraft deliveries by 2040: Airbus

The Middle East region will see 3,020 new aircraft deliveries by 2040, as the region’s air travel and tourism markets are expected to continue their recovery from the pandemic over the next few years, according to the latest forecast from Airbus.

The deliveries will include freighters and commercial passenger airplanes, including new generation types, such as the A220, A320neo, A330neo and A350, the aircraft maker said in its 2021 Global Market Forecast launched at the Dubai Airshow.

“During the period, the fleet in the region will transition to new generation types [of aircraft],” Airbus said, adding that the growth in aircraft requirements will be driven by higher gross domestic product (GDP), which is forecast to post a 2.3 percent CAGR between 2021 and 2040.

“Aviation and tourism will continue to be key growth sectors the Middle East and drive GDP Growth…. Air traffic in the Middle East will achieve full recovery to 2019 levels between late 2022 and mid-2024,” Airbus said in a statement.

Airbus, one of the major exhibitors at the Dubai Airshow 2021, has so far secured two major aircraft orders. On the trade show’s opening day, the company announced an order for 255 Airbus A321 aircraft from Indigo Partners. This was followed by another order on the second day for 111 Airbus aircraft from Air Lease Corporation.

Airbus said the Middle East region is home to five of the world’s largest aviation cities, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, serving more than 10,000 long-haul passengers per day.

It said the strong recovery in the region’s air traffic is due to the Middle East’s strategic location, which is “a vital economic, business and cultural connector between the East and the West”.

“Government vision and strategic investment plans position aviation at the forefront of long-term planning in the Middle East. All of these factors will empower a return to the skies.”
