Legislations to empower women ‘key’
WOMEN legislators in Bahrain are keen on introducing legislations that further empower women and foster social integration.
Bahraini MP Mariam Al Dhaen said the challenge would be to adapt global legislations to local sensitivities.
“We are much advanced in how we treat our women, and gender equality is not an issue. The evidence is in the fact that eight out of 40 MPs, and 10 out of 40 Shura Council members are women,” she said, on the sidelines of the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings at Exhibition World Bahrain, Sakhir.
Meanwhile, Shura Council legislative and legal affairs committee chairwoman Dalal Al Zayed was elected as a member of the IPU Committee for International Humanitarian Law and Respect.
