Inspections stepped up ahead of Eid

INSPECTIONS have been stepped up at central markets as the country gears up to celebrate Eid this weekend.

Measures are being taken to ensure food prices remain stable and are not manipulated, it has been revealed.

This follows directives by Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani to ensure Eid Al Adha isn’t used as an excuse to manipulate prices.

“Inspectors have been visiting central markets on a daily basis for the past few months in the early hours of the morning as stocks of fresh produce are unloaded,” ministry assistant under-secretary for control and resources Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Ashraf said in a statement yesterday.

Prices are registered and stocks monitored.

“As Eid Al Adha approaches, demand increases for fresh fruits and vegetables and through continuous co-operation with the Capital Trustees Authority, we have increased inspection campaigns in preparation for this occasion.”

He revealed that the local Bahraini market is continuously providing a stable supply of fruit and vegetables.

He also said any rise in prices was due to an increase in the price of the product in the country of origin.

“Efforts are on to remove any obstacles preventing the smooth import and sale of produce.”

People have been urged to call the hotline 80001700 to report any violations. They can also register through the National Suggestions and Complaints System ‘Tawasul’.
