Forum to discuss impact of heavy resources consumption

A KEY conference that aims to address concerns of heavy consumption of natural resources in major industries and its impacts on climate change will make its return to the kingdom early next year.

The second edition of the Global Water, Energy and Climate Change Congress will be held from February 23 to 25 next year at the Exhibition World Bahrain in Sakhir.

The event will bring together senior officials, experts and decision-makers from all over the world to discuss environmental issues and review solutions to water-related challenges and sustainability in line with the country’s growing interest in combating climate change.

“Bahrain is keen to achieve its environmental security goals, which come as part of a comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister,” said Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr Mohammed Bin Daina.

“The country will look to discuss, and potentially adopt, effective policies that will contribute to reducing the impact of climate change and protecting our water resources as well as ensuring optimal use.”

Dr Bin Daina hailed the efforts of the Water Resources Council, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, in raising the efficiency of water production in accordance with international standards and ensure the sustainability of water resources as part of Bahrain’s National Water Strategy 2030.

The strategy aims to ensure effective and safe management of the water sector and support sustainable development in the kingdom through the implementation of 32 initiatives.

The first edition of the congress, held in September last year, witnessed wide participation, with more than 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries.

More than 130 speakers discussed important matters including five keynote sessions on water sustainability and energy transitions, implications on the GCC and the rest of the world and pollution.

Industries that participated last year included water and utilities, oil and gas, petrochemicals, steel and aluminium, automobile and construction.

A number of ministries and government agencies also actively participated in the congress including the Oil and Environment Ministry, Works Ministry, Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry and the Electricity and Water Authority.

Important recommendations were made, including initiatives to preserve natural resources, increase investment in research development and studies, strengthen environmental partnerships, focus on developing emerging energy sources such as hydrogen, and encourage financing for sustainability projects.

It also included an event that showcased new and advanced technologies and innovations which enabled experts and policymakers to exchange experiences, determine the best practices and explore opportunities to support and sustain water resources.

It also featured a youth forum, an awards ceremony, leadership panels, technical sessions and workshops.
