Enough fresh food supplies for Ramadan
The Bahraini Farmers Market was awash with vegetables yesterday as the kingdom geared up for Ramadan which will start within a few days.
The Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry has been holding the popular weekly attraction in partnership with the National Initiative for the
Development of Agriculture (NIAD).
Farmers displaying their produce at the market said that large quantities of local vegetables had been on show as a result of an excellent growing season.
Large numbers of visitors of various nationalities once again made the trip to the Saturday market in Budaiya to stock up with fresh produce.
Farmer Jaafar Muhammad Hassan Abdelnabi said: “There is a high demand for vegetables as customers prefer to have sufficient supplies during Ramadan, especially tomatoes and peppers.”
He pointed out that the quantities available were plentiful to meet the needs of the market during the holy month as families meet to break their fasts and lay out healthy spreads for larger late night gatherings.
Mr Abdelnabi said farmers were also offering lucrative deals to customers.
“The month of Ramadan is one of the seasons for which the Bahraini farmer is well prepared for and produces the desired quantities of vegetables, especially those types that are in most demand,” another farmer, Abdul Mahdi Ahmed Issa, said.
This season, the market celebrates its 10th anniversary under the slogan ‘Our Harvest is Bahraini’, with the participation of 32 farmers, four agricultural companies, five nurseries, four apiaries and four businesses specialised in dates.
Twenty productive families affiliated with the Social Development Ministry have also been showcasing their wares.
The Children’s Village has attracted more than 15,000 youngsters with various activities that constitute a ‘qualitative addition’ to the market experience.
