Dior Plans to Make Face Masks for Essential Workers in France

With the hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages that have been caused by COVID-19, brands across various industries have joined in to help in whatever way they can. Beauty companies like L'Oréal and Coty Inc. are using production in their factories to focus on creating hand sanitizer. Major fashion brands like Chanel have pledged to use their production facilities to assist in the creation of PPE as medical staff have had to deal with limited supplies. To add to the help, Reuters reported that Dior will also be offering a France-based workshop for the production of this gear, Reuters reported on March 31.

This announcement comes just as the French government ordered over a billion masks from China for its country this week. President Emmanuel Macron stated that he wanted to focus on manufacturing the masks and other gear produced within the country rather than importing to keep up with the demands, according to France 24. "Before, we believed that we could import masks quickly and in great quantity from the other side of the world...and that we did not need to store billions and billions of face masks," Macron explained. By the end of April, according to Macron, the goal is for facial mask factories in France to increase production from 3.3 million to 10 million per week. Tire and auto part companies like Michelin and Faurecia are also joining in on production efforts.

Reuters reported that Dior's factory in France's northern region of Brittany would be used specifically to create face masks. Dior's focus is to provide these masks for essential workers outside of the medical field who still have to operate. This would include people who work in supermarkets, transportation, and other sectors that deal with the potential dangers of coronavirus while on the job. The brand has not yet shared details regarding its production capacity, but volunteers will be assembling these masks. Allure has reached out to Dior for more details.
