Decision to boost workers' accommodation rights hailed

Manama, Dec. 7 (BNA): The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has praised the decision of the health minister regarding the health requirements and specifications for workers accommodations that guarantee their rights, especially the rights to adequate standards of living and health.

The institution highly valued Bahrain's interest in the welfare and rights of residents, stressing that the decision was consistent with the precautionary measures taken by Bahrain to mitigate the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and protect the workers' right to health.

NIHR said that it would monitor and follow up on the implementation of the decision by employers by conducting planned and unannounced field visits to the residence of foreign workers to assess the extent of compliance with the decision requirements, draft reports and submit them to the competent authorities. It will also take action based on the complaints it receives.

The institution stressed it would deal firmly with any human rights violations or abuses in a manner consistent with Bahrain's obligations resulting from its accession or ratification of the relevant agreements.
