Carrefour to distribute 2,000 reusable bags

THOUSANDS of reusable bags will be distributed to shoppers by a major hypermarket in Bahrain today on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day.

More than 2,000 complimentary reusable bags will be distributed by Carrefour to anyone who has previously purchased a reusable bag or will purchase a reusable bag at its stores.

The initiative comes in line with a decision last month by the Supreme Council for Environment as well as the hypermarket’s efforts to curb the use of single-use plastic across the business, while educating customers on sustainable practices.

The bags can also be purchased at all 12 Carrefour stores for 300 fils per bag.

Each bag carries a lifetime guarantee and will be replaced free of charge at the customer’s request.

“We commend the Bahraini government’s efforts in implementing this law and thereby becoming a catalyst for change in the GCC’s fight against single-use plastic,” said Carrefour Bahrain country manager at Majid Al Futtaim Retail Jerome Akel.

“Carrefour remains committed to aiding in this cause, as we have a proven track record of running sustainability campaigns across markets that are operated by Majid Al Futtaim.

“We also play an important role in educating customers on the concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling.”

The GDN reported Supreme Council for Environment chief executive Dr Mohammed Mubarak Bin Daina saying last month that the first phase of the ban will focus on single-use plastic bags and import of non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Later phases will witness a permanent ban on the use of plastic bags at certain malls and supermarkets.
