Broadband subscriptions in Bahrain hit 2.34 million

BROADBAND subscriptions in Bahrain reached 2.34 million at the end of the second quarter of 2019.

This shows an increase of nine per cent compared to the second quarter of last year, said the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in its second quarter market indicators report that was released yesterday.

It also said that broadband penetration rate in Bahrain reached 156pc compared to 143pc for the same period last year, while data consumption increased to 18pc compared to the same period last year.

The report also stated that average monthly data consumption in fixed wired broadband reached 192GB per subscription, while fixed wireless broadband reached 117GB per subscription, and mobile standalone usage per subscription was stable at 19GB.

“With regard to mobile services, the number of mobile subscriptions is beginning to stabilise at 2.08 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter this year,” said the report.

“It saw a penetration rate of 139pc after a downward trend since the beginning of 2017 due to the change in consumer behaviour in terms of usage and mobile operators’ change of some components of available packages.

“Regarding outgoing voice calls, mobile voice traffic continue its decline as it declined by 14pc compared to the second quarter of last year.”

The report also stated that fixed telephone line subscriptions increased slightly compared to the end of last year, while the fixed wireless services dropped by 9.26pc.

“The fixed wired telephony increased by 1.92pc,” it added.

“Fixed domestic calls remain stable between the first quarter of last year and the second quarter of this year, while international fixed line calls dropped by 25.67pc between the second quarter of last year and the second quarter of this year.”
