BD78m upgrade of Tubli water treatment plant 77pc complete
A STRATEGIC sanitation project that is aimed to improve the environment and wildlife in Tubli Bay and double daily production of treated water is now 77 per cent complete.
The Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant – Phase 4 project comes as part of a major upgrade of the largest wastewater treatment plant in Bahrain.
It aims to enhance the performance of the Tubli centre for production of treated water, double daily production and meet needs for irrigation and agricultural beautification.
The construction of the plant, reportedly costing BD78 million, is being jointly funded by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as part of the Gulf Development Programme.
“The project will meet the needs of urban development by increasing the plant’s average daily flow capacity from 200,000 cubic metres to 400,000 cubic metres per day,” said Works Ministry’s assistant under-secretary for sanitary engineering Fathi Al Farea.
He added that the completion rate of Phase 4 of the project has reached 77pc.
The tertiary treatment plant includes a sand filter unit, an ozone gas sterilisation system, a chlorine sterilisation system, a balance basin and a sludge burning unit.
Mr Al Farea said special technology was used for drilling and tunnelling, adding that a sewer link between the old and the new stations to the sea was 85pc complete.
He pointed out that 7.8m man-hours had been completed with no lost-time injuries, which reflects the top safety measures taken on the project.
“This strategic project will increase the production of treated water used for irrigation and agricultural beautification by using the additional waste water flows coming to the station as a result of urban development and population increase,” he added.
He said the main pumping station is one of the most important components of the project, as sewage water is collected from various regions in the country which is approximately 26 metres deep, and made of 2.6m thick reinforced concrete.
The project includes a collection room for wastewater streams 21m underground and a pump 25.1m underground that will receive wastewater flows from the collection room.
The construction includes several buildings for laboratories, a workshop, the plant’s administration and the Sanitation Affairs Directorate.
Phase 4 of the Tubli Wastewater Plant Expansion project is being implemented by the consortium of WTE Wassertechnik, Azmeel Contracting and Construction Corporation and Tecton Engineering and Construction.
Since 2018, WTE has been expanding the Tubli wastewater treatment plant.
The operation and maintenance of the old and new plants will be funded by the Bahrain government for 10 years.
