Bahrain MPs seek to ban UK flights

MANAMA: An urgent proposal to ban flights to and from the UK following the outbreak of a new variant of the coronavirus was tabled yesterday.

It was submitted online to Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal by five MPs led by Parliament public utilities and environment affairs committee chairman Mohammed Buhamood.

“The UK is in turmoil with the spread of what its health authorities have described as an out-of-control strain of Covid-19,” Mr Buhamood told the GDN.

“All flights have to be suspended with immediate effect as Bahrain does not need more health woes when the situation here is under control,” he said.

“We are sorry that some people have planned Christmas and New Year holidays there with their families and loved ones, but health concerns warrant extraordinary measures.”

The proposal is scheduled to be discussed tomorrow unless the Cabinet approves it before that.

l Bahrain’s Embassy in the UK, meanwhile, said in a tweet last night that “there is currently no change in policy. The situation is being monitored and every passenger arriving to the kingdom is being tested on arrival”.
