Bahrain gears up for hosting IPU meetings
Manama, Mar. 8 (BNA): The Shura Council Chairman and Speaker of the Council of Representatives have affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain will receive more than 1700 parliamentary personalities from more than 143 states to participate in the 146th session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and associated meetings. The meetings will convene in the Kingdom of Bahrain from March 11 to 15 with the participation of Speakers and representatives of parliaments, organisations and parliamentary unions.
The Shura Council Chairman and Speaker of the Council of Representatives announced that all preparations to receive the parliamentary delegations have been completed. They pointed out that around 60 parliament Speakers will arrive in Bahrain to take part in the biggest international parliamentary gathering.
The Shura Council Chairman and Speaker of the Council of Representatives were speaking during a visit today to the Exhibition World Bahrain to follow up on preparations to host the IPU meetings. The visit was made in the presence of Chairman and members of the national organizing committee of the 146th session of IPU General Assembly.
The Shura Council Chairman and Speaker of the Council of Representatives asserted that the event is considered a good opportunity to build relations with regional and international parliaments and highlight Bahrain’s civilizational image to the participants. They took pride in the kingdom’s approach of coexistence, tolerance and peace, which turned it into a unique model at all levels.
First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and President of the national organizing committee of the 146th session of the IPU General Assembly, Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, commended the support accorded to the committee by the Shura Council Chairman and Speaker of the Council of Representatives to ensure success of the meetings. He indicated that the IPU Secretariat General has put in place a comprehensive programme for the meetings and the issues on their agenda. He underlined the importance of holding the meetings in Bahrain, describing it as a new achievement for the kingdom’s democratic march.
