80 per cent of new Covid-19 infections caused by new variant, says top medic
Almost 80pc of new Covid-19 infections are a result of the new variant, it has emerged.
“The mutated virus is spreading quickly especially as a result of gatherings, hence it is important that all take vaccine as it will contribute to limiting the spread,” National Taskforce for Combating Coronavirus (COVID-19) monitoring committee head Lt Col Dr Manaf Al Qahtani said.
He was speaking at a Press conference organised at the Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research at the BDF Hospital.
He said vaccine would reduce complications from the infection and limit mutations.
“Study in Bahrain on vaccination efficacy showed that the spread and intensity of virus was more on those who did not take vaccine,” he said.
National Taskforce for Combating Coronavirus (COVID-19) member and Salmaniya Medical Complex Infectious and Internal Diseases consultant Dr Jameela Al Salman also called on all citizens and residents, especially obese and overweight people, to register for vaccination.
