535 buildings identified for green energy in Bahrain

The authority has already launched a public tender for the installation of solar panels on rooftops of eight government schools on a trial basis without any investment cost or expenses borne by the Education Ministry.

Authority president Dr Abdulhussain Mirza said Bahrain has a plan to bring online about 250 MW of PV capacity by 2025 – enough to provide around five per cent of the country’s demand – of which solar energy projects represent the largest part due to Bahrain’s geographic location and favourable climatic conditions.

The tender for installation of solar panels on rooftops of the eight schools represents a pilot project which will be followed by installations on other government ministries and institutions, Dr Mirza said.

The authority received applications from 21 government bodies proposing to include their buildings and areas available in public bids for the installation of solar energy systems, he added. The cost of electricity for schools is expected to drop by around 30pc. Successful bidders will have to finance and manage the system and ensure maintenance works for 20 years, he pointed out, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
