Exemption from paying utility bills for a further three months proposed

An urgent proposal to exempt individuals and companies from paying utility bills for a further three months has been included in Parliament's final session tomorrow.

The government is already exempting everyone from paying electricity and water bills and waiving municipal fees for April, May and June.

It is under a BD4.3 billion government support package to offset the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The proposal presented by five MPs for the months of July, August and September is spearheaded by Parliament woman and child committee chairwoman Fatima Al Qatari.

"Even if things return back to normal or people start gradually returning to daily business, sitting at home will continue taking most of the time and companies will need space to manage operational costs," said Ms Al Qatari.

"Recovery even with Bahrain's outstanding measures is a long process and for that we are seeking to have the exemption of electricity and water continue for another three months."
