Bahrain’s first drive-in cinema opens doors

Bahrain’s first drive-in cinema was launched last night at Bahrain Bay.

Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister and Bahrain’s Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) chairman Zayed Alzayani patronised the event with participation of senior officials representing relevant authorities.

The opening of the first-of-its-kind entertainment destination comes after the temporary closure of movie theatres given the current exceptional circumstances.

“Bahrain’s private sector is constantly seeking creative ideas to develop the business environment and brave the current economic challenges, in one way or another,” said the minister.

“Promoting recreation sector has become necessary to cope with these exceptional conditions facing the economy in general.”

He pointed out that opting for drive-in-cinema today is a new choice for leading companies in the cinema industry to keep abreast of these global changes, with open opportunities for more innovation.

Mr Al Zayani also attended the screening of the first movie Knives Out. Two films are to be screened daily.

Mukta A2 Cinemas and event management group PICO have launched the 100-car park theatre.

Mukta A2 Cinemas Middle East chief operating officer Akshay Bajaj last week said, “We are very thankful to the authorities in the government of Bahrain for this opportunity; Drive-in BH is much more than a nostalgic idea or retro way to see movies; it is also one of the safest ways for communities to gather,” said.

“People are looking for quality experiences and drive-in cinemas are the perfect destination. We feel a sense of responsibility, we’ve got to do it really well and safely so that people have the confidence to go back to cinemas,” he said.

Tickets will be sold per car with a maximum of four people through the website wanasatime.com. It includes a food and beverage package while added gourmet options will also be available.

The movie soundtrack will be available on a dedicated FM frequency.
