Bahrain ranks among top generous nations in World Giving Index 2018

BAHRAIN is listed among the top 10 generous countries in the world when it comes to donating to charity, helping a stranger and volunteering, according to a new study.

London-based Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) released its annual World Giving Index 2018 which ranks Bahrain as the 10th most generous country in the world with a score of 53 per cent.

The index also states that 74pc of people in Bahrain helped a stranger last year, 53pc donated money to charities or the needy, and 33pc have spent time volunteering.

Indonesia tops the CAF World Giving Index for the first time with a score of 59pc, followed by Australia, New Zealand, the US, Ireland, the UK, Singapore, Kenya, and Myanmar, while Yemen ranked at the very bottom of the list.

The index on global generosity has also listed other Gulf countries with the UAE ranked 12, Kuwait 33 and Saudi Arabia 51.

A total of 146 countries are covered in the index covering around 95pc of the global population.
Over 150,000 people worldwide completed the survey last year that touched upon different aspects including charity giving behaviour.

Other interesting findings were that the most likely age group globally to have helped a stranger were those aged 30 to 49, followed closely by the youngest age group, 15 to 29.

The index showed that Myanmar has the highest donating money score for the sixth year running.
Countries where women are more likely than men to volunteer include Switzerland (44pc of women vs 29pc of men), France (35pc of women vs 27pc of men) and Poland (18pc of women vs 11pc of men).

The report also stated that donating money has increased amongst those from developed nations, from 40pc to 42pc, but has declined amongst developing countries from 25pc to 24pc.

It has also declined amongst the older age groups who have historically been the most likely to contribute to charity.

“The CAF World Giving Index gives a unique insight into trends in generosity across the globe,” said CAF chief executive Sir John Low.

“It is the starting point for conversations around the world about how we nurture and grow people’s natural desire to help others and come together to build a better society, wherever we are.”

Across the continents, helping a stranger is the most common giving behaviour with 65pc recorded in Oceania and 58pc in Africa, while Europe has the lowest prevalence at 44pc.

Europe also has the lowest rates of volunteering, at 19pc, of any of the continents.
